Clear or metal braces...which is better?

I'm about to get braces, but would like to hear people's views on both types. I've read about breakage and staining with clear braces, and one of the Orthodontists I went to for a consultation also mentioned that you've to be careful what you eat with the clear braces as they can easily get stained and discoloued, so I've tp be careful with things like tea, coffee, pop and other beverages that may stain it. I would like to hear from people who've had clear braces, did you experience any staining or discoloration with them? And for anyone who has had metal braces, what were your experiences? And for the clear ones you can't change the colours of the brackets (i think they're called brackets...the square things on top of the wire, but with the metal ones you get to change them whenever you go for a checkup, right?)Clear or metal braces...which is better?
I would go with metal. I have metal right now, and I only know one girl with clear braces. I love my metal braces for many reasons. Number one is, they make me look so much better! Plus, I think clear braces would look tacky. Number two is, it shows that your not trying to hide you braces. Why is trying to hide braces bad, you ask? Well, other people could think that you don't like how your teeth look and that you have low self confidence. And my last reason is because they hide your teeth (or at least distract people from them). If your getting braces, you probably don't have perfect teeth (duh!). So, metal braces kinda distract people from your imperfections, while the clear don't hid them at all (um, you can see right through the clear!).





Honestly, I think the clear braces look like you have little things stuck in your teeth, because you can see the outline but not the color. Also, my friend that had clear braces hated them, because everytime she'd drink a colored slushie or something, her brackets would turn the color of the slushie! Also, I think the clear braces cost more? But I could be wrong. So, if I were you, I'd go with metal braces.





BTW, The colored things that you can change are called ';bands';. The bracket is the thing that your trying to decide if you should get it in metal or clear. In other words, the bracket holds the band on.

I don't find clear braces any less noticeable. I had a friend who had them. And you don't have to worry about discoloration with metal braces. Well, unless you get a clear powerchain (but many orthodontists offer them in colors, mine didn't) or you get super light colors on your brackets (ie, baby blue.)





And it's super easy to stain them. Pizza, soda, coffee, tea, spaghetti have all done it for my power chains. And it's not like, oh, her power chain is stained. It's like, yuck, her power chain is stained.





So yeah, go with the metal.
I have clear braces but my orthodontist gave me the kind that don't stain
i have the metal ones and i HATE them. Like, with a passion. There are these metal things that are attatched to all 4 of my very last teeth on my mouth, and this little thing sticks out and stabs me constantly! I get sooo many cankers on my tongue from it, its soooooo irritating I want to rip it out myself. And they told me it would heal and my toungue wouldn't be bothered by it anymore after my mouth gets used to it, but its been 2 years!





also my brackets ALWAYS fall off. Like right now 2 of my brackets are off and beside this the elastic fell off so the wire is kind of like just chillin there. Like omg, they are soooo ******* annoying. Then I have to go to the orthodontists and they have to put 2 more brackets on and i basically just wasted a month. I hate them! I want them off sooo bad!





I would def get the clear ones.
I agree with Tarynn. Clear braces arent any less noticeable. In fact it is more noticeable than metal because have you always spotted when someone has clear braces? Most people will say yes because they thought it was a gunk of plaque on the persons teeth. From a distance(and is some cases up close) the clear ones look gross due to the staining. I guess because metal is the norm it fades into the background, because people rarely remember when someone has metal braces but you cant forget the gross look of the discolored clear ones.

I have metal ones right now, and they're fine (although I want them off, of course). I would rather have the metal than always having to be watching what you eat, so the clear doesn't get stained. I, too, have clear power chains and they in themselves are a HUGE pain. They always get yellow, and I would absolutely hate it if I couldn't change the clear rubber band when I went to the orthodontist every month. Another thing is that when the clear stuff gets stained, it makes your teeth look SUPER yellow. And having that attached to your teeth for 2+ years? AGHHHH!!!





DEFINITELY METAL. You'll regret it if you go with clear.
well.... with clear braces when food gets stuck in them u can c it a lot... with color braces u can choose any color u want which is a lot more fun then just clear... and if people make fun of u just say well look at ur teeth.. lol
