I just got my braces off. Which retainer do you recommend? The clear ones, or the one with the metal in the middle?
I would like to hear from people who has had experience because i've heard different qualities about both these retainers.Metal Retainer Vs. Clear Retainer?
I would take clear retainer. Metal retainer is annoying.Metal Retainer Vs. Clear Retainer?
I have had experiences with both types of retainers.
However, they do different things. The one with the metal wire is usually used when there are still slight adjustments to be made with your teeth, there might be a slight gap or something and the wire retainer can be used until your teeth are all in good alignment.
The clear retainer is usually used when your teeth are in good alignment and no further adjustments need to be made.
Your orthodontist will tell you which ones you need. The metal one gives you bit of a lisp at first but you get used to it after a couple of hours. The clear one can be a little awkward too because your teeth are completely covered with plastic, and when you bite your teeth together your teeth don't touch... just the plastic, as a result of the plastic I always clench my teeth at night.
But either way, your orthodontist will tell you which ones to use and how to use them. They are both good =D I have to wear them both, but only at night, one night I wear the metal one, and the next night I wear the clear one.
The metal one is a lot easier to keep clean though, and the clear one can stain! The metal one you can also choose an interesting design for the plastic part of it, so if I haaad to pick just one, the metal one is probably the most convenient and it does everything the clear ones do and more.
The ';types of retainers'; you are referring to are confusing. I know of two types:
The first type (most common) is a molded plastic retainer with a stainless steel wire on the front of it. This retainer fits on the roof of the patients' mouth.
The second type (probably more expensive to get, but not specific to certain patients) is also a plastic retainer, but this one only touches the teeth. This retainer does not touch the roof of the patients' mouth and it is shaped like a U.
My retention phase just ended and I got retainer number one. This retainer is extremely uncomfortable to wear and when my orthodontist put it in my mouth for the first time (about a year ago), I could not believe that this thing in my mouth was my retainer. I recommend that you do not get this retainer if you were very picky about your braces. My orthodontist never even mentioned the other type of retainer so I am not sure if it is a special retainer (for patients with different characteristics). I assume this retainer is much easier to deal with when you wear it, so I would ask your orthodontist about retainer options.
