I purchased a gunmetal business card case. It's quite a bit like stainless steel. The problem is, the instant you touch it, it shows the prints as if it was tarnished. Is there anything I can put on it that is clear but resist fingerprints? Polyurethane? Can anyone recommend a clear metal glaze?
There are a couple of things you can try.
We use baby oil on our stainless just put a very small amount on a rag and rub it in. You can try wax for stainless. There are numerous cleaner/ polishes for stainless check in the kitchen cleaner isle used for stainless appliances.
I hope one of theses will work for you
Good luckCan anyone recommend a clear metal glaze?
Shellac or quick dry lacquer in a spray bottle. Depends on the color or hue you want. Lacquer is water white or clearer Shellac is yellowish.
Is it oxidized? Is it rusted? Then it IS stainless steel. They don't call it, ';stainless';, for nothin' my friend. There's no, ';like stainless';, about it. It either is, or it isn't. And a urethane plastic liquid isn't going to stick to it any better than anything else would. This last goes a long way toward explaining why they call it, ';stainless';, no?
Here are some suggestions. First, determine what the box in question is made of. If it is metal, and you are sure there is nothing coating it, then you can be pretty sure that it is stainless, or aluminum. Check using a fridge magnet or something.
If it is alloy, then you can have it anodized with a clear coat at your corner body shop for a six pack, and some kind words. If it is stainless, you can have it acid etched and painted, anodized, or powder coated for the small price of a luxury yacht, or perhaps your first born, virginal daughter. Rattle can, urethane or acrylic, paint aint gonna stick to that at all.
Oiling the box will prevent finger prints of course. Like 3 in 1, or some Tri-flow, or in a pinch WD-40. But then you have to be careful where you set it. No wood, for obvious reasons, but also avoid plastic surfaces, or just about anything that would be damaged by, say, contact cleaner.
If you are hell bent on getting a clear, protective coating on it, try the corner body shop and some fast talking. That will be your best, most affordable option.
I bought a clear can of spray paint that I put on everything to protect it from spills, etc. Go to any store that sells paint and ask them if there is anything like that.
