Do i get to choose if i want the metal retainer or clear retainer?

Your dentist / orthodontist should offer you the choice, unless they think that a certain type may be better for your teeth - the wire and plastic ones (hawleys) allow your teeth to touch, and some people think that this is important. Some dentists / orthodontists may only use a certain type of retainer.





Hawley retainers are more durable and last longer, but some people do not like the fact that they are more conspicuous. Essix (or clear) retainers are less visible but will not last as long.
